International Education Week: TCC celebrates with keynote speech, film

TCC celebrated International Education Week with a speech by an Old Dominion professor and the screening of the film La Yuma.

Steve Yetiv, professor of political science and international studies at ODU, delivered the keynote address, “Dimensions of U.S. and Global Energy Security,” at the Roper Theatre. The TCC Global Learning Committee, chaired by TCC Spanish Professor Gabriela Toletti, sponsored the event. The committee values global learning as an essential element of education that prepares students for the realities of a culturally diverse, technologically engaged, economically interdependent and ecologically vulnerable world.

“We were honored to have a keynote speaker whose experience and expertise highlight this global vision,” Toletti said.

The film La Yuma is the story of a strong-willed, rebellious girl from the poor neighborhoods of Managua who dreams of becoming a boxer. Toletti and Tim Konhaus, professor of history and humanities, led a discussion afterward at the Advanced Technology Center on the Virginia Beach Campus.

International Education Week (IEW) is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Education held the third week of November. IEW recognizes the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. This annual initiative aims to promote international understanding and build support for international educational exchange by encouraging the development of programs that prepare Americans to live and work in a global environment.
